Friday was our last day in Maui. We were going to get up to see the sunrise on top of Haleakala which is a volcanoe on the island, but we would have had to pack up and check out by 3am which proved to be difficult and was voted out the night before. So instead, Richard and I got up and saw the sunrise over the beach. Sound romantic? Well next to us was a homeless man sleeping next to his bottle of beer so you can imagine how romantic it really was. It was quite beautiful though as it came up over the mountains and I really enoyed seeing all the crab tracks and holes and watching the crabs come out as the sunrose. We nicknamed one crab "chicken" because it would pop out of its hole and almost just as fast pop back in. It did this about 10 times before we left. The other crabs seemed to be fine.
We did head up for Haleakala to an elevation of 10,023 feet. It was neat to see how the lava had flowed and the red peaks caused by magnetic fields up there.
We also went to watch the windsurfers and kite boarders at a beach. They are amazing. They would get like 30' of air on some of the waves, but most would not land these jumps.
As a final thing before heading to the airport all of us watched the sunset on the beach. We were trying to skip rocks on the ocean and Richard got pretty good at. It was fun when they would hit wave just about right and skip out about 10-15'.
The aiport in Maui was incredibly slow and even being there 2 hours early we still just made it in time when they started boarding the plane. It was sad to leave, but after falling asleep on our over night flight I was ready to return home to my own bed.
Thanks and Keith and Christine for the great trip!
